An Illustrative World

After brainstorming and coming up with different ideas for my next blog post, I finally thought to write a blog post on ‘Digital Art’, as it will be an interesting topic to talk about. We live in a world full of illustrations. An illustration is a picture that describes a story or a meaning behind it. It can be in any form of art, a drawing, painting, photograph or digital art, etc. Illustrations can sometimes have a deeper meaning to it or sometimes, it may just be an art form to depict the impossible.

Digital art refers to art in the online and multimedia platforms. This can include designing character graphics for video games, developing animated videos for company advertising, creating 3-D animation for feature films, and even enhancing the photographs and editing them using Photoshop, Illustrator or other software for publications.

Alright, now lets talk about the pros and cons of digital art:

Pros:

  • Flexibility. Drawings drawn using a software and designing or editing a photo is more easier when it come to digital art. This is due to the options, “Undo/Redo”.

  • Extra Tools. Some artists feel like using this is cheating in a way. But what would be a great way to use these tools for purposes like ‘smudging’ or ‘blurring’, if you are editing an image or a photograph.

  • Cheaper in the long run. Buying a digital tablet is expensive for sure. But it can be used many years.

  • Easier to keep safe. The art that you have made using a software on the tablet or the computer, it is always easier to save it in the storage, without any fear of losing piece of work.

Cons:

  • Carelessness. Because of all the tools available, like ‘Undo/Redo’, artists tend to become less careful with their application of medium.

  • The look. Digital Art can have a very “digital” look. While others enjoy it, some may find it very boring.

  • No original. Some traditional paintings cost thousands and millions of dollars, and then their prints cost $10-$200.

  • Printing. The digital art that you make might look absolutely stunning on the computer, but might look different on the phone, and way too different when it’s printed.

There are different kinds of software that are used to make digital art. But there are two in particular that I would like to talk about, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, as I have worked with them.

Adobe Photoshop for Digital Imaging:

Double Exposure - 1

Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Inc. for Windows and MacOS. It was originally created in 1988 by Thomas and John Knoll. Since then it has not only become a graphics editor, but is also used for making digital art. Digital imaging is the creation of a representation of the visual characteristics of an object. It allows you to create impossible and merge images together to form a completely different image. It also allows you to illustrate or draw things which are impossible.

Adobe Illustrator for Graphic Design:

Word with text

Adobe illustrator is a vector graphics editor and design program developed and marketed by Adobe Inc. It was originally designed for Apple Macintosh. It’s development began back in 1985. Along with Creative Cloud, Illustrator CC was released. Graphic design projects visual communications intended to transmit specific messages to social groups, with specific objectives. It allows you to create or design a product or a logo.

Logo design

Lastly, I would say, it has always been my pleasure to work with these tools as they have allowed me to make or create and come up with my own digital art. It also has allowed me to create a unique product and logo design. Making a product and a logo design was a part of a course. But sure, it was all fun to do so.
