Today, there are so many known genres of music that I have lost count. To be honest, I’m a person with mixed-music taste. In a nutshell, I like all genres and gladly accept all kinds of music. Serve me anything, I will have it without complaints. Yet I personally prefer “World Music”, a term that describes a mix of various mainstream genres. I myself make music, compose tracks, create beats; all from scratch. With no formal/ informal training in music of any kind. I just feel the music and understand how the composition would sound better.
Here I give you my top music genres, along with li'l sneak-peek of my hand crafted music.
My top genres are Pop, Hip-Hop, Soul, Rock, R&B
Honourable mentions: Blues, the ‘80s, Film Scores, EDM, Reggae
1. Pop
This is a versatile genre. Since it’s experimental nature, it never goes out of time (/grows old). It always remains fresh. Its popularity is mostly amongst the youth and hence the term pop.
It had the music of West feel to it because of its origins in the United States and the United Kingdom during the mid 1950s, but today it has worldwide appeal.
Pop songs are some of the most engineered songs. Very often the original voice of the singer is modified to achieve the desired tune
Pop music is always in vogue. No wonder why artists like Michel Jackson and Madonna were such sensations, that it continues to resonate till date after so many years. It has blended with almost all other parent genres and main genres of music, as it can take any form. Many cultural have accepted pop and given out their own form of pop, like K-Pop.
My personal favorites are
2. Hip-Hop
Does this need an introduction at all? Well, if yes then Hip-Hop, is not a mere genre, it’s a culture comprising many aspects. Its development is credited to African Americans, Latino Americans, Caribbean Americans in the Bronx and New York.
Besides this, the true originator of Hip-Hop was the trio DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash
It gave me a sense of identity. It quickly became a symbol of struggle, fight against injustice, racism, and a new world.
Hip-Hop generated the Hip-Hop form of dance, MCing, DJing, graffiti art. While talking in respect of music, hip hop is considered Rap Music, for which it is the backbone. In a way, this gave birth to Beat Boxing in which the human mouth is used to imitate and produce instrument sounds. Though it has few African roots, Beatboxing prevails in Hip-Hop and is quite impressive.
Hip-Hop is the most futuristic and technical style of making music. It is heavily engineered and tons of samples are used. It would be fair to say that Hip-Hop also gives rebirth to old and forgotten songs. Hip-Hop is so powerful, it influences every aspect of our lives, you may have never noticed. It also has formed so many sub-genres that people often don’t realize that it’s Hip-Hop. Today, all countries have their style of Hip-Hop.
3. Soul
Soul music is mainly an amalgamation of R&B and Gospel Music. It also has elements of Rhythm, Blues, and Jazz. It was originated in the African American community throughout the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s
The very spirit of soul music is liveliness and liberty. It infuses love in the air, the atmosphere gets cheerful and blissed. These are quite pleasant to the ears and the mind of course. It gets you in the mood, by lifting it. It’s a very effective mood booster. It may soothe the heart, calm you down or get your feet swaying! It has inspired Pop and funk genres of music today.
4. Rock
Originated in the United States, it quickly grasped the European continent.
Rock music has quite enjoyed its seat in the industry as mainstream music. Though there is no way to specifically define Rock, a major distinction is that it is mainly rhythm and no melody! Imagine that!
Candidly it’s a form of music with a strong beat, it has simple tunes and is sung very loudly by a considerable small group of people with electronic guitars and drums. Can’t be more explicit.
The vibe is so vibrant that you can’t resist it. It flows through your veins, and rushes the adrenaline into your hearts!
I think of myself as God of Thunder listening to rock. 😆😆
5. R&B
R&B is an acronym for Rhythm and Blues. This genre is difficult to distinguish. But certain beats are instantly identifiable. It’s rhythmic and is soulful blues, but hold up! It’s definitely not Soul music as the description may seem to be. Rather it is very close relative to Hip-hop.
R&B is upbeat and smooth as silk. It hits low-key. It has sounds that people might not often hear of or listened to. It is also used to back up Rap songs.
